INTRODUCTION OF CHILILAB

 

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

 

CHILILAB is a Demographic Epidemiologic Surveillance System (DESS) belonging to the Hanoi University of Public Health (HUPH) in Viet Nam. This is an important research facility that provides infrastructure to support a wide range of public health programs. The establishment of CHILILAB was initially supported by the China Medical Board of New York

.

CHILILAB  is located in Chi Linh district of Hai Duong province in the Northern part of Viet Nam and is about 60 km Northeast of Hanoi – Vietnam’s capital city.Chi Linh was chosen because it represents the national situation regards public health issues/problems.This facility is centrally located within an important economic triangle of Northern Viet Nam. The rapid development of Chi Linh district makes different from other parts in Hai Duong province. The people and socio-economic conditions of Chi Linh district are diverse with both traditional rural and rapidly urbanizing. Adolescents and young adults (aged 15-24 years) make up nearly 20% of the total district population. The local authority has a commitment in establishing DESS for improvement of people health. 

 

THE GOAL OF CHILILAB

 

The goal of the CHILILAB DESS is to collect basic demigraphic and health indicators, on a regular basis, for undertaking public health research and training activities. This can serve as a basis for policy making and capacity building in order to enhance local community health and Vietnam public health.

 

PRIORITY RESEARCH AREAS

1.  Trends in general motality and motality under socio-economic changes.

 

2.  Patterns and trends is adolescent health (reproductive health, STD, HIV/AIDS, injuries) and the risk, and protective factors influencing adolescent health and health behaviors.

 

3.  Patterns and trends in non-communicable disease under the changes of socio-economic status of the population.

 

POPULATION UNDER DESS

 

The population that forms the basis for this surveillace system is approximately 64.000, spread across 3 townships and 4 communes which are undergoing rapid process of urbanization.
