17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health at Cape Town, South Africa

From 7 to 9 March 2018, the 17th World Conference on Tobacco and Health (WCTOH) was officially held at Cape Town, South Africa.

Held every three years, WCTOH is the premier international conference on tobacco control. This year, it unites more than 1900 researchers, academics, non-governmental organisations, civil society, scientists, healthcare professionals, policymakers and public officials working on all aspects of tobacco control from more than 100 countries. WCTOH is a call for a collective resolution to fight tobacco use by working together and integrating tobacco control into our health and development goals.

The theme of conference is Uniting the World for a Tobacco Free Generation with an overarching focus on expediting progress to reduce tobacco use in all populations around the world – using new research and innovative approaches in public health, as well as powerful but under-used policies, including tobacco taxation and those aimed at preventing industry interference.

Attending the conference, Tran Thu Ngan and Nguyen Thuy Duyen representing the Center for Population Health Sciences (CPHS) - Hanoi School of Public Health presented the most updated researches on tobacco control field. Two studies were presented included the health impact assessment model of Raising Tobacco Tax policy and findings of potential impact of graphic health warnings on cigarette packages. The two studies have a significant contribution in strengthening the evidence base for advocating the tobacco control policies in Vietnam.
